How to give a killer presentation.

Giving presentations is hard. Many of us are extremely uncomfortable speaking in front of an audience. It takes practice and skill. Here are some helpful tips. Excerpts from: https://hbr.org/2013/06/how-to-give-a-killer-presentation

Frame your story
We all know that humans are wired to listen to stories, and metaphors abound for the narrative structures that work best to engage people. When I think about compelling presentations, I think about taking an audience on a journey. A successful talk is a little miracle—people see the world differently afterward.

Plan Your Delivery
There are three main ways to deliver a talk. You can read it directly off a script or a teleprompter. You can develop a set of bullet points that map out what you’re going to say in each section rather than scripting the whole thing word for word. Or you can memorize your talk, which entails rehearsing it to the point where you internalize every word—verbatim.

Develop Stage Presence
The biggest mistake we see in early rehearsals is that people move their bodies too much. They sway from side to side, or shift their weight from one leg to the other. People do this naturally when they’re nervous, but it’s distracting and makes the speaker seem weak. Simply getting a person to keep his or her lower body motionless can dramatically improve stage presence.

Plan the Multimedia
Keep it simple; don’t use a slide deck as a substitute for notes (by, say, listing the bullet points you’ll discuss—those are best put on note cards); and don’t repeat out loud words that are on the slide. Not only is reciting slides a variation of the teleprompter problem—“Oh, no, she’s reading to us, too!”—but information is interesting only once, and hearing and seeing the same words feels repetitive.

Watch the following video and write a short paragraph (3-5 sentences) critique about Richard's presentation. How did he follow the strategies identified above?

  1. Richard Turere's presentation was very impressive for his age and it even followed many of the guidelines above. Richard was able to frame his story and take his audience on a journey from his small start as a boy from Kenya, just herding his father's cows in the savanna, to a successful and acknowledged pioneer in his own community and across the country. Richard also planned his delivery by using pictures in his presentation, thus making it easier for the audience to understand and visualize what he was talking about. Lastly, Richard had a generally calm and confident stage presence.

  2. I think this boy is doing very well. He also won a scholarship because he did not harm the lion and also protected his own poultry. In his speech I saw the possibility of coming to a great inventor.I hope he can invent more things to protect his homeland.

  3. Richard grabbed his watches attention by telling his life story up to the point of his success. he used pictures with little to no words on each slide. Richard was calm and cool while talking during his presentation and he was not in a rush and he was explaining everything and he was very organized and not jumping around.

He took good steps to calmly and get his point across without many words on his slides. For his age, his ideas were organized.

  5. I think he did a really good job with his presentation. If I was him I wouldn't even be able to speak in front of all those people. He was moving but no too much, if he were standing still it would just look weird. And he threw in jokes so the audience wouldn't bored.

  6. In my opinion Richard is a very bright young boy with a creative mind. He did a great job with his presentation and followed all of the points. He moved around when he spoke and he made eye contact with the audience which made him look confident. Also, he made a couple jokes which lightened the mood and didn't read off of anything.

  7. I think Richard used the techniques of framing the story and planning the multimedia the most. He used the story explaining how lions helped him invent this device and he didn't drown the audience in slide shows and lectures. The story smoothly led into the explanation to his invention and the presentation was short but sweet and simple.

  8. In my opinion, Richard an awesome job. The strategies above were clearly noted when he was able to take the audience on an "adventure", memorize his speech, and make a simple, but still amazing, slideshow that he did not read word from word. The only critique I do have is that he couldn't really seem to stand still. However, I can overlook that considering he was obviously very nervous, being so young, and overall had an awesome presentation.

  11. Richard Turere accomplished his goal in the TED Talk. He framed his story by showing pictures of his home in Africa, describing how his family was challenged by the lions who were hunting the family’s livestock. This format helped explain the need for innovation. By using the storytelling technique, Richard was able to explain his invention. His stage presence and delivery were very effective. He was comfortable telling his story, and we could see this in his facial expressions and when he laughed. His delivery was excellent because he was prepared, but it didn’t seem like he had memorized his talk word for word. His use of multimedia was also well done. He provided beautiful pictures of the setting while pointing out the important points. Overall, Richard Turere is a very effective presenter.

  13. Richard's a very brave boy; I could never get up in front of a crowd that big and give a presentation that good. He has a very mature stage presence, he isn't fidgety and even cracks a few jokes. His multimedia doesn't distract from him speaking. He also isn't reading off anything. I enjoyed hearing his story, and viewing his presentation.

  14. I think that this boy is very smart and determined, because of how he didn't give up on finding a way to save the cows. From his presentation I have learned so much, and I actually enjoyed it as well. He frames his story really well and keeps his presentation simple so we don't get bored. His stage presence needs a bit of work, since to me at least, he looked awkward, but he also had a smile on his face that made me feel happy throughout the entire presentation. He didn't have a script and knew what he was talking about, which made me take an interest into what he was saying. The presentation the boy did was very well prepared, delivered, and presented, at least that is what I think.

He did a very good job for someone who is so young, better than most people that are older than him. His speech was interesting and kept the audience with him throughout it, at times he even joked a bit. It felt very personal, yet was very informative.
