Digital Literacy 101

There has been a lot of talk in the news lately about the abundance of fake news. Fake news is information deliberately posted to confuse people, drive traffic to websites and in many cases can have a significant impact. We know from class that anyone can create a website. It is now our job to become detectives of what is real vs. what is fake.

Websites and news organizations make money from advertising when we view their content. There are three important distinctions for you to know:

  1. Native Advertising - advertising that tries to sell or promote a product in the guise of a news story
  2. Traditional Advertising - most common advertising that sells or promotes a product
  3. News story - real content containing factual information about a subject and independent of bias and should answer, who, what, when and how
For this post take a look at the following website banner and answer this question:

Is this native advertising, traditional advertising or a news story and why?

  1. I think this is traditional advertising because it is simply an ad that encourages people to seek interest in the writing school known as "Gotham Writers." It is not hiding behind a news story, nor is it containing substantial amounts of information about a subject that are unbiased and answer who, what, when, and how, like a real news story would. Lastly, this ad provides things that traditional advertisements also include, such as discount codes and use of the words "save" and "limited time only."

  2. This looks like a traditional advertising ad because it is just a normal ad. It does not provide nearly enough information for it to be a news story, nor is it hiding behind or pretending to be one. The ad is just trying to promote Gotham Writers.

  3. In my opinion, this looks like traditional advertising. The information presented is brief and to the point. It also does not seem to act as a news story. This ad's sole purpose is to present "Gotham Writers," and attract consumers.

  6. This is a form of traditional advertising because it is trying to promote the writer’s workshop to the consumer. You know this by looking at what the ad is providing, for example, the discount and this feature can draw more people into investing in the workshop.

  7. I believe that that advertisement is a form of traditional advertising. The reason I strongly believe this is because the advertisement banner seems to only want to promote writers around the world to use their workshop. The company who owns the banner do not seem to want to promote news stories, like in native advertising or in news story.

  10. The advertisement displayed as an example portrays what is called traditional advertising. It is a typical advertisement because it is just intended to promote whatever they are attempting to sell. This is not fake news because there is no fake story behind anything the advertisement is trying to sell.

  12. I think this is traditional advertising because of how the ad is basically advertised. Its making people intrigued about being able to write a story. The website and creators of this organization are making revenue off of the free will of interested people looking into the website being advertised

  13. I believe that this advertisement is an example of traditional advertising because you automatically know what's being sold to you. It's promoting a writing application and the words on it saying "We know you've got a story" and "Limited Time Only" can intrigue the people seeing this ad to actually get it.
