Digital Responsibility

By now you have probably heard about Logan Paul. If not, he's a Youtube "celebrity" that recently filmed himself in Japan making fun of a suicide victim. It sparked global disgust and outrage and has since been removed from Youtube. Before it was removed it had been viewed 6 million times and most of his viewers are young people.

It is important to discuss issues like this when they come up. Seeing incredibly graphic content displayed in a mocking manner can be debilitating for young people who may or may not have developed coping mechanisms for viewing such material.

For this post please comment about your reaction to this case. Were you aware of who he was and what happened? What do you think is an appropriate response? With just a click of a camera we can instantly transmit high offensive and morally repugnant content. How far is too far?

  1. I knew who Logan Paul was before reading this, and I had also viewed the video before it was taken down from YouTube because of the publicity it received. Although I am not a follower of Logan Paul, this was one of the only videos of his I have ever seen. Personally, after viewing the video that has since been removed from YouTube, I was extremely disgusted. I do not understand why he did not turn the cameras off completely after finding the dead body in Japan's Famous Suicide Forest. His actions were irresponsible and putting them on the internet for all of his young followers to see was clearly inexplicable. I have also seen his apology video and believe that he is still not fully comprehending how much damage he caused to the minds of his young followers who were exposed to such a sensative subject like suicide. If young people and his followers are to take any lesson from his careless actions, it is that suicide is not a joke, and certainly not a joke that should be broadcasted online for anyone to see. Young people need to understand that what they post online matters because anyone is subject to viewing it and the positive or negative affects that might come from this.

  2. In the video logan paul decide to blur the face of the man who took he life. Influencers, such as Logan Paul, are impressionable on children and social media. Social media has taken overs everybody life and news travel fast. The next day the story was headlining and for him to have such regard for someone who was dealing with mental health is horrible. Although after he deleted the video he later continued to post an apology video and an apology tweet. People with Logan Paul’s status cannot make mistakes like these because of the press around them and the children that are watching his videos. Apologizing does not fix what he does. It also doesn't fix the fact that he didn't have enough common sense to shut the cameras off and have respect for the man and the family of this man.

  3. Children look up to older people in their lives. Wehter it be a parent, older sibling or cousin, friend, babysitter, or public influencer. Children learn by example. My brother and cousins are followers of Logan Paul, so i knew who he was before this occured. I also saw his movie. Logan Paul has a following of over 10 million people. He flew from his house in california to japan to go camping in suicide forest, knowing that many people kill themselves there. He thought that by blurring out the face of the man it would protect the mans privacy, but it is still so disrespectful. Logan Paul thought it would be enough to post an apology video and it would be over, but an apology doesn;t change what has already happened. This is too serious of a situation to just apologiza about. So many people saw the video before it was taken down by youtube, and so many other youtube accounts reposted the video after the original one was taken down. This sets an example for all of Logan Paul's young followers that stuff like this is okay; that exploiting a dead person and their family is okay. Public people are constantly followed and on camera, but it was Logan's choice to post the video. It was his choice to pull out the camera when his friends found a body. Decisions have consequences, and these consequences arent going to be stopped just because of an apology.

  4. I was extremely disturbed by Logan Paul's Suicide Forest video for much more than it's content. The video was personal for me as I have had to deal with the suicide (by hanging) of someone I knew. I know first hand how hard it is for family, friends, and even just acquaintances to deal with someone taking their own life, and how it impacts the life of everyone the victim knew. The person filmed in the video was someone who felt they had nothing more to live for, that death would be a better option than facing another day. I don't think Paul thought about how many people seriously deal with thoughts of suicide, many of them being teenagers (his main audience) who face everyday battles with depression and anxiety. I was appalled by the fact that Logan Paul thinks his actions can be justified. His claims that he was trying to bring awareness to suicide is a joke, because if he truly cared about the topic and the victims, he would have respected what an extremely personal matter it is, and not have gone into the forest at all. Not only did he go into the forest, he also recorded a hanging body and made fun of it, which is beyond despicable. I also can't understand how his fans can still stand by him, as I have seen many posts attempting to justify his actions, saying things like 'laughing is his way of coping' or 'he wasn't thinking.' Clearly, he had enough time to think about what he was doing when he was planning, and booking a trip to Japan, going into an UNAUTHORIZED part of the forest, filming the video and body, flying back home, editing the video, creating a thumbnail, and uploading it YouTube. You could tell he hadn’t taken the video seriously from the very beginning, not only by his actions, but by little things like the hat he felt the need to put on before entering the forest. It was designed to look like the Toy Story aliens. I’m not bashing Pixar, nor am I the Fashion Police, but he looked really foolish and was obviously joking around get-go. Also, after he finds the body, and he’s saying that seeing a dead body was a first for him, he goes on about how he never expected to see a dead body in the suicide forest and asks it if it was alive. Honestly? You walked into the famous Suicide Forest and didn’t think you would see a body? Not only this, but he also said, and I quote, “This was supposed to be a fun vlog.” How in God’s name was this supposed to be a fun vlog? How is anything pertaining to suicide going to be "fun"? I think that was one of the worst things in the entire video, and is all the proof that anyone should need that he never, at any point took this video or the topic of suicide seriously. He also monetized his apology video, meaning that he made a profit when his video was viewed. Then he also said he thinks he deserves a second chance. In my opinion, the ideal response would have been to completely ban Logan Paul from YouTube, however, it took YouTube almost two weeks to just come to the decision to simply cut ties with him. In doing what he did, Logan Paul not only gave himself a bad name, but gave all of YouTube a bad name too; there are many YouTubers who use their platform for good, and to bring happiness into the lives others, and now they need to suffer because one person was a moron.
I’d like to apologize about how long this comment is. Suicide is a topic that hits very close to home for me, as I have had to deal with it before and it was incredibly difficult. So, I know it isn’t something to joke about. Dealing with suicide turned my life, and the lives of my closest friends upside down, and I only wish that it was taken seriously.

  5. When my brother told me that Logan Paul had posted a video in which he made fun of a dead person who had committed suicide, I was shocked. How could someone with such popularity and influence over young people do something so insensitive? Many people watch his videos, my brother included. Then it became trending, and I cringed, why would people want to watch that? Knowing what he had done, because it sparked controversy all over the internet, why would you go and watch the video? What Logan Paul did was extremely insensitive, suicide is a serious topic, not a joking matter. His video is basically telling it’s viewers that suicide is not that serious, and it is. As someone who has known people who committed suicide, I know the effect that can have on a person’s family and people they knew. Suicide is a very personal topic, and the fact that many people chose to end their own life is very sad. Trying to lessen the seriousness of a topic like suicide, especially by joking about it is disrespectful to all those who have coped with the suicide of someone they knew. If you are going to the Suicide Forest to film a video, then you have the intention of bringing up suicide in your video. There is nothing wrong with raising awareness of this issue, but their is something wrong about joking about it.

  6. I was aware of who Logan Paul was before news of this video broke out. I am absolutely disgusted by his creation of the video. Suicide is a serious and depressing topic, one that has personally affected me and many others. Paul's blatant disrespect for the man he found in the forest was rude and immature and his decision to go in to the Suicide Forest for a video in the first place was inconsiderate, especially since it is well known that he may possibly find someone who has committed suicide. And even worse, to joke and laugh about it when he finds someone is completely repugnant. The man that Paul recorded was suffering greatly and made the serious decision to take his own life, which is meant to be private and Paul exploited this privacy. He also had the indecency to post this video to the public video sharing service, YouTube, without thinking of the repercussions and inevitable backlash he'll receive. Many of Paul viewers are young people who look up to him. By posting this video, Paul is leaving a bad influence on these young children, corrupting them and making them believe that suicide is not something to be taken seriously. Though Paul posted a video in attempts to apologize for his actions, it's not enough, for he still has to face the consequences. He has affected so many people, and doesn't seem to know that millions of people around the world have suffered from depression and thoughts of suicide. By creating this video, he is NOT spreading suicide awareness, but rather degrading it, which is unacceptable. Suicide is an incredibly hard topic to speak about, but by laughing at the man he found in the forest, he does nothing but hurt himself and his viewers.

  7. I knew about Logan Paul since he was on the six second video app called Vine. I found him very funny when he was on vine, but I later stopped watching him when he became a youtuber, but I have heard of all the drama that he and his brothe, Jake Pual, have been in. When I heard the news that he had posted a dead body on YouTube, I thought that was utterly disgusting and it was very low of him. I have known that he was becoming more and more of a joke over time, but this was crossing the line. I don't understand why he didn't think it was wrong of him to humiliate a person who killed them self. That person must have been having a hard time dealing with his or her personal life and thought that was the only way. I believe Logan Paul purposely went into the "Suicide Forest" in Japan in hopes of only getting views. Not to help spread awareness of how big depression and suicide is. He really wasn't thinking when he posted that video for millions of fans to see, whom I might add are younger than fourteen. He is poisoning the minds of young kids, who don't have or understand depression, by giving them the idea that it is ok to make fun of people who are struggling with depression. Well it isn't, and many young teens also struggle with depression and suicide. If teens who are struggling with depression saw this video, then they must be hurt by how Logan is treating the issue. Many people watch YouTube because it helps entertain and bring enjoyment to them; it gives them a break form school and work. Millions of people watched Logan Paul because he was funny, but I don't think anyone who was trying to get a laugh out from a bad day saw this as funny.
I understand he made a mistake, but as a blogger he should be aware of what he posts on the internet. By recklessly posting the video he embarrassed the suicide victim, their family, and angered their friends. This wouldn't have happened if he was aware of the public embarrassment he would give the poor victim. This shows that everyone must be aware of who and what they post on the internet. Just saying sorry after millions saw the video isn't enough, since the damage was already done. Posting a ugly photo of someone is embarrassing enough, but posting someones dead body is crossing the line. This is how I feel about the situation.

  8. I knew of Logan Paul before this happened and even watched some of his videos. The videos that I saw were just harmless fun and they were actually kind of funny. This is in stark contrast of his recent post which is utterly disgusting. I have not watched the video myself nor did I know of it until now, but hearing about how he was mocking a person who committed suicide is very disturbing to me. There is nothing funny about people killing themselves and it is not something that he should be joking about. The fact that he posted such an insensitive video is outrageous specially since Logan has been doing videos for a while now. He should have known that what he was doing was completely unacceptable and would cause massive outrage. His apology for posting the video is not enough. He should talk to some people who lost someone to suicide or who were once suicidal themselves and see if he finds it funny. Before you post something on the internet, you should think about how others will feel when they look at it. If the post is something that is likely to offend people, then you should not post it. Anything that ruins or ends people's lives is not something to be mocked. If I were working with Logan, funding his videos, etc., I would instantly sever all ties with Logan. After all, someone who can do something as terrible as this should not be making millions of dollars for what he does. Since Logan cannot grasp the seriousness of this issue, I do not think that that he should have gone to Suicide Forest at all. I also find it shocking that that the people he worked with to make the video even let this be posted. How can an entire team of people be so insensitive? I really hope that what people get from this incident is that suicide is no joking matter and it is a major problem. I also hope that it brings awareness to the issue because it tragically effects the lives of so many people.

  9. I knew of Logan Paul before this happened, but had not watched much of his content. The videos I had seen did not raise any concern or hint that he was the type of person who would put onto film and upload onto the internet someone who had commited suicide. That he was insensitive enough to joke of someone feeling like they needed to take their own life because it would get him more views. This is taking it too far, because posting something as controversial a subject as suicides on the internet is a huge no.Suicides are no laughing matter and are a major poble in today's society. This video has however, been of some use because it has brought awareness to how serious suicide is and the tragic effect it has on the people who knew him or her.

  10. I had known about Logan Paul long before this video was posted. When it was still on youtube, I saw part of the video, but as soon as he went over the the person who killed himself, I got rid of the tab on my phone. By him just saying a pathetic apology does nothing for all of the young followers of his who saw some they admired, laughing at something that is usually viewed as sad and morbid. No matter how many times he apologizes, it will never be genuine. If he was really upset over what he did, it would've upset in the moment. He is posting these videos of crying apologies, because he is now getting so much backlash from everyone, and he is hated by most of the world. The fact that he ever laughed at the sight of a dead body hanging from a tree is disgusting. Why would he knowingly go into a Japanese forest where people commonly go to commit suicide and bring a camera with him if he wasn't planning on filming something awful. There was even a moment in the video, where one of his friends told to take out the camera once they saw the body. He did this on his own, and he did it to himself. This is a situation that he will probably never be able to come back from, and he won't be missed.

  11. Logan Paul is a disgusting slob who does not have any self-respect or respect for others. I never watched his videos because I knew he was an egotistical, divisive maniac, but now, more than ever, he is receiving backlash. He posted a morbid video showing a suicide victim, and instead of YouTube doing things to stop the video from reaching the public eye, it did nothing, and even allowed it to get onto trending. Logan Paul is a popular person who misused his influence to harm the minds of innocent people. Even though he apologized, I don't forgive him.

  12. I used to watch some of Logan Paul's videos before the latest one that he posted. I found it disgusting and disrespectful to record a person that took their own life for views and popularity. I did not get to watch the full video before it was removed but I watched an edited version (that did not contain the body) and while doing this, I thought about that victim's family and friends who may have been watching or heard about this event. If I were put in there situation, I would be really upset and angry with Logan Paul because no one deserves to have this much disrespect. If he really cared about suicide prevention, he would have put down the camera and took a stand. I haven't watched any other videos because I do not support this individual.
